alt Alibang Leisure Farm has a primitive, aboriginal landscape that allows visitors to directly "touch," "hear," and "see" the incredible abundance of nature. There are more than 100 species of butterflies, 60 plus species of dragonflies, and 19 species of frogs. This is a cradle for the preservation and proliferation of rare and protected animals. The farm takes the "ecological restoration" approach toward running the farm business, putting the concepts of "partition management" and "volume control" into practice for ecological tourism. The farm is persistent in applying the idea that "preservation comes first, education comes next," and offers interesting in-depth narrations and tours to lead visitors to personally feel the wonder of nature.

Alibang Leisure Farm is located in the Shimen District of New Taipei City, on a vast tract of 10 plus hectares set 130 meters above sea level. This is an isolated and beautiful valley, where the terrain brings an everchanging landscape. Notably, the ecosystems are very well preserved, including the wetland ecosystems, creek ecosystems, open prairie ecosystems, pond (lake) ecosystems, and forest ecosystems, which are rarely disturbed, and through a long evolution, this land has amassed biologically diversified fauna and flora. According to a biological survey, this area has more than 100 species of butterflies, 60 plus species of dragonflies, and 19 species of frogs. Such an ecological abundance makes this farm a treasured land for getting close to nature, exploring nature, and learning from nature.

The debut of this farm started with a bunch of people who wanted to "leave a decent environment for future generations," so they collectively invested to buy this land, and with a mindset of "defending nature," they put the principle of "natural restoration, low development" into practice. As a result, the farm has been preserved in its most primitive form. The entire farm is without excessive artificial traces, and is free of the usual tourist buzz. What the farm offers are woods and flowers, ecological ponds, and forest trails, and what you hear are the chirps of insects and water gurgling. Slow down your pace and observe, and you'll be amazed to discover that every corner has different insects and birds. Especially in the summer time, the area provides a big carnival parade of butterflies, dragonflies, stick insects, cicadas, mantises, stag beetles, frogs, snakes, formosan blue magpies, white-eye birds, barbets, crested serpent eagles, and so on. The massive quantities are breath taking. This ecological leisure farm is genuinely the most primitive and aboriginal ground for a real tour of nature.

The farm has a huge tract of land. To maintain the ecosystems, however, only ten percent of the land is open to visitors. And the quantity of visitors is strictly controlled on a daily basis. The belief in "doing nothing is the best way to preserving environment" has been substantially illustrated by conservation done in this farm ranch. Since the "ecological restoration" is put into practice, the farm offers little agricultural products, thus lacking the display of farm living. However, the farm has a very clear and firm orientation, thus the experience programs are all related to ecological education, including the night observation, trail navigation, and a tour of the Alibang Creek. With all the hugely abundant biological species and massive quantities, the eco-tour is highly valued. The narrators are well trained and their professional navigation will lead you into this profound knowledgeable tour of nature, interesting and fruitful.

The dinning is almost outdoor style, with simple shelters covering the surroundings. There is no wall at all. So, the dinning is completely in a natural environment. Different from a general restaurant, this one is considerably signified with the farm ranch's ecological theme. The food ingredients are nearly all sourced from the farm or nearby specialty markets. Food service requires reservation because all the ingredients are strictly fresh, thus the purchase quantity has to be managed to keep the freshness. In the kitchen, the cooking utensils are well arranged and the entire cooking environment is clean and neat. The cutting boards and knives for raw and cooked foods are separated for hygienic control. The tableware is washable and reusable for the sake of environment protection.

alt

The farm is not running a profit based business, and therefore preservation of the primitive nature is highly accentuated. The architecture in the farm is simple and the guest rooms are renovated from the original farmhouse, which come in rooms for 4 persons, 6 persons, and 8 persons as well as rooms for group visitors. The hygienic condition is very good, but we just can't ask too much for coziness and excessive decorations. The farm also offers outdoor camping. To implment the eco-friendly practices, the ranch doesn't provide bathroom supplies, so visitors are encouraged to carry their own supplies and help us to implement the environmental protection.

The best time for the eco-tour is the seasonal transition from spring to summer, a time when all the lives are flourishing. This is a wonderful eco-tour highly recognized by visitors with different backgrounds. The tour is divided into three categories. The "Alibang ranch eco-tour" allows you to observe butterflies, dragonflies, stick insects, cicadas, and mantises, as well as the plants such as cherry blossom, wisteria, azalea, and lotus. The "Alibang Creek eco-tour" allows you to walk and play in the water way of the 40-meter wide creek to observe the abundant shrimps and other aquatic animals. The "Night observation" allows you to observe the Taipei brown frogs, Chinese tree frogs, Tettigonioideas and crickets.

The pure and clean wetland of "Alibang" provides an ideal sanctuary for fireflies to proliferate. As a result, this place has been a very popular venue for observing fireflies. Fireflies, also known as "golden fire lady", are a beetle with soft body and wing tips. When they are hatched and feather, the mature female and male fireflies will illuminate in their habitat to solicit companions. And before long, the female fireflies will rest on twists to attract male fireflies for mating. Different fireflies do different illumination, and the light wavelengths are also different. For example, the red-breast black-wing fireflies exude orange lights, while the black-edge fireflies exude yellow green lights. As for the "yellow-edge fireflies", most commonly seen in Alibang they exude yellow lights.

The Alibang Leisure Farm has been through a long time of fallow, thus preserved its aboriginal landscape. Meanwhile, the cultivation of nectar and herbivorous plants has gradually increased the quantity of butterflies. Tiger butterflies are the most commonly seen species in the farm, while the most attractive butterflies are the ones of Papilionidae, including swallowtail butterflies, common jays, common bluebottles, and lime butterflies. These butterflies elegantly fly in the farm for mating and feeding, and dancing to the rhythm of nature.

The scaffold standing in the middle of the pond has seasonal fruits growing on top of it, and the trail around the pond are planted with bright and colorful flowers such as hibiscuses, azaleas, and golden dewdrops, that are the favorites of bugs. The trail gathers all kinds of herbivorous insects, like having a bugs carnival, very lively and bustling. Nowhere else is better than this place for insects observation.

The edible cornel, also known as "Cicong", is a Rutaceae deciduous tree, which was used in ancient times as a herbal medicine for exorcism and avoiding diseases. It is moderately dry and moist, and can be use to kill bugs and alleviate pains. It is good for health and has a high economic value. Its thick aroma attracts insects to feed, and even human takes it as food ingredient. It is beautifully nicknamed "Xiang Fei of plant kingdom" and "Bunun Tribe's Wei Jing". Its seeds, hot and spicy, can be used as substitute for pepper, and its leaves can also be used as food material and seasoning, or for making healthy tea drinks and regimen cookies. For instance, the Alibang Ecological Leisure Farm has used the herb as material to develop handmade cookies and seasoning gift packs.
